Background
My interest in sculpting was raised by a quite unusual talk with one of my younger
patients, early on in my clinical career. One-year after his cancer treatment, he
explicitly wanted to know what his chances for cure were. I could outline these for
him to be excellent, but that obviously only time could tell. Some years later, he told
me that at that same day, at the age of 48, he had quitted his job as director of a shoe
factory and had started a successful sculpting career, which eventually lasted 20
years. Seeing his achievements within only a few years was very inspiring. The definite
trigger to start was the 2002 TV/Teleac course by sculptor Kees Verwey. The course
videotapes, a basic set of instruments, and some pieces of stone enabled a flying start.
After my first experience with a small, nicely colored piece of soapstone, I was
hooked. In-depth information on the internet from other sculptors, happy to share
their knowledge, was also helpful to gradually improve and expand my technique and
to develop an organic, non-abstract style. Having several formidable "coaching" art
friends is a great educational help, as well.
